2026 Dubbed the Era of the Frog Game.

Although I thoroughly enjoyed the recent indie games event was undoubtedly entertaining, my main revelation was not the intended one: I am declaring that 2026 will be the unrivaled era for frogs in video games.

No fewer than five of the featured titles—Frog Sqwad, Stretchmancer, Unshine Arcade, Awaysis, and Big Hops—prominently include these hoppy characters. Given that a gathering of frogs is termed an army, it seems they are launching an invasion.

From Classic Icons to Modern Mania

Frogs are anything but new to the world of games. Ever since the era of Frogger to the beloved froggy chair in Animal Crossing, they have long held a niche presence. But, their prevalence has seemingly surged in recent times.

A cursory search for "frog game" on Steam unveils an overwhelming flood of results. Although, some of these are low-budget titles, a great many are bona fide Frog Games.

Tracking the Tadpole Trend

To understand this trend, I performed a deep dive into the last half-decade of frog-related gaming on Steam. My methodology was admittedly subjective, focusing on games with frogs in the title or prominently displayed in screenshots.

The results paint a clear picture: a consistent rise from under 20 titles in 2020 to close to 60 in 2025.

This notable escalation prompts the question: why the sudden leap? The amphibian's growing prominence in the public consciousness is also visible elsewhere, such as the resurgence of Frog and Toad as nostalgic figures. Yet, the wave in gaming looks especially pronounced.

The Allure of Amphibian Mechanics

Frankly, this is a trend I can fully endorse. Frogs possess inherent appealing traits for game developers.

  • Charming Creatures: They are ideally shaped to be designed as memorable characters that often become a fan favorite in any game.
  • Innovative Systems: Their long tongues and sticky tongues facilitate a myriad of innovative control schemes.

Several the featured titles smartly employ these traits. Take the tongue-based traversal in Big Hops and the extra-long limb puzzles of Stretchmancer.

The Leap Into 2026

So, what does this mean for 2026? With five frog games already announced before the year has officially commenced—and the chance for more—the evidence suggests for it to be the most significant year yet.

When these games perform well—and historically, games from this showcase tend to succeed—we could very well be entering a true croaking cultural moment.
