The United States central bank lowered interest rates on midweek, representing the second reduction in the current year amid economic turbulence stemming from the government closure and trade duties.
Decision Comes at Extraordinary Moment for Federal Reserve
The decision to reduce the key rate by a quarter point to a span of 3.75% to 4% comes at an extraordinary moment for the central bank. The authority has been under immense pressure to cut rates even with persistent inflation.
Central Bank Announcement Highlights Job Market Shifts
In a statement, the Federal Reserve said that the jobless rate had gone up but stays modest. “Job gains have slowed,” the release notes. “Price increases has risen and remains moderately high.”
Government Shutdown Hinders Central Bank’s Task
The ongoing federal government shutdown, now among the lengthiest in US history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Collection of key financial statistics has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are on leave during the closure.
Data Gap Affects Policy Decisions
The Fed usually studies BLS data to assess employment trends, including the number of employment gains added to the market and the current unemployment rate. The last jobs report was published in the beginning of last month, prior to the shutdown, and gave a somewhat gloomy snapshot of the jobs market in the previous month.
The figure of jobs added to the market in August was lower by more than 100,000 since the earlier season, and joblessness rose to four point three percent – the peak since 2021.
Alternative Reports Indicate Ongoing Slowdown
Though the bureau was set to release September’s job market report in early October, it halted its publication when the closure started. Private payroll firm ADP reported earlier this month that the private sector cut thirty-two thousand positions in last month, a sign that the employment landscape is continuing to slow.
“Both the supply and demand for labor has declined quite sharply,” Fed chair the Fed chairman stated recently, a trend he had previously said comes from trade and immigration measures.
Price Data Reveals Moderate Increase
Though BLS’s jobs report has been paused, the agency still released its inflation report for last month that indicated that prices are rising, albeit gradually. Costs increased three percent over the past twelve months, the highest since January. In spring, the yearly price increase was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal price increase is two percent.
