As any significant honors show draws close, one notices a demand for introducing fresh award types to recognize underappreciated efforts and delight the passions of fans dedicated to specific genres.
My colleague made the case supporting a scary games classification. That would rule. The same goes for tabletop games, representing a dedicated supporter's campaign. Yet I need to apologize in advance if I try to elbow in front since similar to dedicated enthusiasts, I have a cast-iron argument supporting my request remains most pressing above others. Here's the proposal: It's essential to create a category for puzzle games.
Organizing Gaming Categories
Classifying creative works defies precise measurement; it’s very subjective, and typically start arguments concluding with vague boundaries. There’s a reason movie academies steer clear of genre categories. But it is a necessary evil in the world of interactive entertainment, which are so diverse they hardly constitute as a single art form.
For comprehensive acknowledgment of interactive entertainment excellence to receive acknowledgment, and for games of all stripes to compete fairly, classification by type becomes crucial.
Present Award Structure
The major gaming awards currently feature award types recognizing Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Collectively, these six categories successfully include a lot of ground, and you can find room for numerous titles.
This doesn't apply to brain-teasing titles. No appropriate category exists to put them. Think about these recent excellent titles, each quite distinct: building puzzles in a particular game, intense tile-matching from another release, engaging interpersonal challenges of a third title. What category would fit them between these six categories? Simply put, no category fits.
Recognition Challenges
There are dozens of brilliant puzzle games launched regularly lacking appropriate categories in entertainment awards, if they accidentally match award groups including Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, or the extremely competitive small studio competitions.
- A renowned logic title wasn’t nominated for anything that year
- Another creative title missed out that year
- Popular arranging title got ignored recently
- Only a few puzzle games managed to sneak into small studio or handheld classifications
Significance of Puzzle Games
Commonly they're compact experiences, yet the craft behind logic titles holds tremendous importance. Famous handheld logic titles count as most engaged experiences in the world maintaining this status for an extended period.
The famous puzzle experience rivals popular creative games claiming status as highest-selling title ever; it’s also in the running for best game of all time. Puzzle games are foundational for gaming as medium, and engaging across multiple categories.
Proposal and Rationale
Puzzle games wouldn’t have that issue. One could readily select multiple candidates with fascinating, diverse, deserving games annually without trouble — or rather, with difficulty, given the need to exclude so many good games out.
To emphasize again, these are games that otherwise have no home at major gaming awards. Puzzle game makers operate at the hard edge of video game design, creating some of most fundamental forms within interactive entertainment. Just like cinema stunt performers, they merit acknowledgment. We shouldn't delay 35 years.
